Phyllis Nicklin Series: God and my right and a couple of bikes
One of a series of paintings made for the Nicklin Revisited exhibition at the Reuben Colley Gallery in 2016. During the 1950s and 1960s, Birmingham was caught on camera by Phyllis Nicklin, a geography tutor at the University of Birmingham. Nicklin captured Birmingham at a time of massive change. The urban environment was being transformed, and new communities were changing Birmingham's demographic profile too. A small selection of photographs were used as a jumping off point for the production of new images that sought to reinterpret the archive material.
