A portrait in which a vivid red coat slices like a switchblade through a field of aquamarine, inspired by the colour of Chinese porcelain glaze. The deceptively simple composition uses this dramatic dynamic to direct the eye towards the delicately painted face of the figure. The face acts as a mid-point, which anchors the figure below to the space above the head. (Shown at the BP Portrait Award 2001).
