Cas and Her Girls

122 x 150 cm, oil on board
A group portrait that consciously avoids the usual placing of the focus point at the centre of the picture. The action hugs the boundaries and only the mothers gaze fills this space. The mother is preparing to go out for the evening her daughters imitate and act out imagined scenarios of the night ahead. The painting has no specific located setting, lending it a dreamlike feeling, a remembered moment rather than one in the present. The pose of the mother is echoed by the standing daughter, the scarf around the girl’s waist echoes the mothers Miro type pattern on her mother’s dress. All the colours of the daughters’ clothing are found in the mothers dress: turquoise, reds and pink. (Commissioned portrait).
