Two girls dressed in very English riding clothes (and their school ties) to reflect their interest in riding. The Englishness is contrasted with the background of antique, hand-painted Chinese wallpaper from the library of their home. The girls both chose their favourite birds to appear in the picture. The pose reflects their close relationship. The painting is a diptych painted on separate panels, which can be hung together or apart. The foliage spreads across the two panels uniting them pictorially.
