Network

42 x 60cm, oil on board
Network is an exercise in balancing pattern and form. The structured, grid-like pattern in the background is used to accentuate a narrative suggestion of making a connection, forming part of a network. The large area of horizontal and vertical lines is echoed in the figure’s pose and this device is employed on a smaller scale with the hair’s curls mirrored by the spirals of the telephone cord. A harmony of pattern and form within the figure itself is achieved through its division into the realistically described areas of the face and torso and the concentrated area of pure pattern created by the striped trousers.
