Stripes

71 x 92cm, oil on board
Stripes is one of a series of paintings which use pattern and composition to emphasise emotional content. The three figures within the picture appear as if perhaps queuing for something, although this is left deliberately ambiguous. The figures themselves act as stripes and are set against a repeated pattern of stripes. This is used to emphasise the figures’ emotional isolation and the habitual behaviour implied by their arrangement. At the same time both the stripes and figures form part of a greater whole.
